So, we said so long to our Dakota. It was sad but something we had to do. We'd decided that if we sold it we would look for a second hand truck that we could buy and own. Well, you should have seen us surfing the autotrader website. We were looking from Ontario to BC for a second hand Toyota truck. Brian had found one in Victoria and one in Winnipeg that he liked but we'd have to wait until the end of March to see them. So we kept looking. On Thursday, I was talking to a friend who owns a Toyota and another person overheard our conversation. She informed me that her husband was selling his Toyota truck and gave me his name and number. I passed it on to Brian during lunch but never heard if it was what we were looking for. When I got home from work, Brian commented that he liked the truck and it was in our price range. He failed to inform me that he'd already test driven it and taken pictures until later that night. We wanted to have it inspected by a mechanic so Brian called up the Toyota dealer in town and got an appointment for 1pm to have the truck checked out. By 5pm when he picked me up from work, he'd bought the truck and organized insurance on it and I'd only seen pictures of it!! I was totally okay with it because he liked it and the price was right. One friend was totally correct in saying that I liked it because I'm frugal!! Needless to say - here it is. It needs a few things fixed but is otherwise a great vehicle.Saturday, March 03, 2007
A busy 2 weeks!
Well, we decided to sell our truck a couple weeks ago. I was worried because we had to buy out the truck from the lease first before we could sell it. So if it didn't sell, we'd be paying for the truck even though we didn't want it. Luckily, there was a couple in Yellowknife that were looking for a newer Dodge Dakota. They saw our add in the "Yellowknifer", called us on Friday, test drove on Saturday and offered to buy it on Sunday. It sold in 24 hrs!!!!

Dog walking experience
Well, I wanted to try something different tonight when I walked Sadie. So, I got my cross-country skis ready and off we went. We walked down and around the corner to a snowmobile trail. Once on the trail, I took Sadie off the leash and I put on my skis. I had to strategically dispose her bags so that I could pick them up on my way home. So, off we went, in the dark on a snowmobile trail. Needless to say, there were a few surprising bumps and I almost fell over a couple of times. Sadie listened really well (I think the Milkbone helped) and would come when I called her. We even met another dog on the trail and she let him go off and followed me!! I'm impressed with her every day. Well, we headed back home and I was debating about skiing back but it was just too difficult with Sadie on the leash and a poop bag in my hand. We were on the first road and there were 2 dogs off leashes. Sadie went beserk. She was going after one then the other. Next time I knew a truck was going by, she was running, I'm still wearing my skis ... I think my arm's 1 inch longer! Well, now I had to take off my skis. A little hand-eye coordination and it was accomplished but not before Sadie ran in another direction and I ended up sprawled on the ground. We walked home, me carrying the skis and poop bags (yes bags - every mother is proud when her child poops and pees!) and Sadie on the short leash. She was good all the way home. Lesson learned: next time I have to take off my skis before I hit the road!

Late nights . . . early mornings . . .
I've been thinking about my two friends with new babies over the past few weeks. They are getting minimal sleep but have this new bundle of joy. I, on the other have a husband who flies medivacs. Last night at 12:38am, the phone rang calling him in the work. I was startled and woke up to turn the light on but went back to sleep once he left. This morning, I woke up at 6:30am and he wasn't back yet, then his alarm went on at 7:30am. I guess it was time for me to get up but there was still no sign of Brian. By doing some math in my head, I figured he should have been back by now but if he had to fly somewhere else then he wouldn't be. But because it was early in the morning, he didn't call to wake me up and tell me. So here I am waking up in the morning hoping he's safe and sound. After a year and a half of marriage, I've learned to roll over and fall back asleep after his loud buzzer alarm goes off or if he gets a call for a medivac. I can't complain, my sleep is disrupted but that's only been the fourth time since October so its not too bad. Not like my friends with their new babies!!

Christmas vacation
Brian and I had a great Christmas vacation. We flew down to Edmonton and met Karlyn Bedwell, his best friend Ryan's 10 week-old daughter. She was adorable and survived me holding her a couple of times. Then we went on to Victoria. Our flights were great and mostly on time. We arrived in Victoria and Brian commented on the smooth flights - I commented that its not totally smooth until we get our bags. Needless to say, our bags arrived 7 hours later and we now have a credit with Westjet. We spent Christmas visiting Brian's uncle, aunt and grandfather and my grandparents, parents, sisters (and boyfriends), uncles, aunts and cousins.
On December 27th, we went and helped my grandparents and uncles clean up the lake property. We the huge wind storms in BC, thousands of branches had fallen off the trees and the ground was just laden with them.
I borrowed some clothes from grandma and we spent 6 hours picking up the branches and throwing them on the fire. We had 2 big 4 foot fires going for 6 hours.
Finally, we took the ferry to Vancouver and visited Brian's grandfather's old property on the Alouette River in Maple Ridge where he used to spend all his summers. We had dinner with Brian's aunts Kim and Kathi and Uncle Vern and cousins Aaron and Paul. Overall, it was a relaxing vacation and we were able to visit everyone we wanted to.
Our new friend, Sadie

Well, for the past 3 months, Brian and I have been talking about getting a dog. He was really keen but openly stated that he wasn't so keen on walking a dog. So, I was hesitant to get one because I would have to walk it. We were also thinking about getting a puppy but I thought it would be too hard for me to run home everyday at lunch to put it out like my friend Kari does. Then I mentioned getting a dog from the pound because they don't cost as much as a new dog. Well, we were at a standstill. Luckily our friend Linda called and said that her future daughter-in-law had a dog who was at a friends and that they were overwhelmed with a younger puppy and were looking for a new home for this dog. Well, Brian and I made the split-second decision and said yes, we'd like the dog. So the next night, we adopted a 3 year-old Golden Retriever named Sadie. She is well trained and loving. We have enjoyed our past month with her. Surprisingly, Brian is the first to take her for a walk. We've enjoyed out time getting to know her and will tell more stories later.

A new routine!
Well, as September has rolled around and I've decided to start exercising. So far, its going well. I'm into my second week and still plugging away. I'm chugging away on the elliptical (now for 25 minutes) and doing 20 minutes of Winsor pilates every other day. Needless to say, my belly feels skinnier and I had a colleague ask if I'm doing anything different lately. So, it's working, yeah!!

a northern experience
Well, I feel like a real northerner. I've finally done something I've wanted to do for the past 3 years. I picked wild northern cranberries!! I spent half of Saturday and Monday squatting down in the bush - becoming one with nature. And I have picked 1 1/2 gallons of berries so far. I need a week to recover - sore arms from canoeing and legs from bending down. But I can't wait to pick more. You would not believe how many are out there. I have no "secret" spot and I've told everyone where I got mine. But this year, there is no such thing as a "secret" spot. The berries are abundant and growing. I can't wait to try making cranberry sauce to go with Thanksgiving turkey!

My summer projects
Whenever, I visit my grandma or aunt, I start a new craft project. I grew up spending a weekend with grandma and making all my Christmas presents for all my aunts and uncles. Well, this summer was no different.
Sometimes, things are just suppose to happen. This summer I met a couple from Norway - Spitzbergen to be exact (78th parallel north) and she was showing me her winter gear. She has wollen gloves and a hat that was knitted and then felted. I'd never heard of felting before but thought it was kind of cool. It was a idea that would work up here in Yellowknife (63rd parallel north)
I've also started another project - felting old wool sweaters and making bags. I show you my first prototype. They are going to be Christmas presents so I can't show you all of them.

Well, I have 3 knitting projects, 3 sewing projects and 3 other projects on the go. It's a good thing I don't have kids!!

Anyways, I arrived at the lake my aunt had a book about felting and my cousins are all knitting with wool so they can felt!! I guess it was going to be my next project. So I bought the wool and started knitting. It's pretty neat to see the change in the projects before and after. So here it is:

3 months behind!!
Well, it's been three whole months since my last post! That's a long time and I don't have an excuse for not writing in my blog.
So here's my update:
I spent a week in Edmonton after YC taking care of my in-laws. My mother-in-law had just had a knee replacement and I was the chauffeur as my father-in-law can't drive. I then returned home to Yellowknife. After a few weeks at work, I flew out to St. John, NB for the Canada Day long weekend for a physiotherapy conference - it was great like last year. It's neat to see what our association is doing for us. Next I was back at work for a few more weeks. The weather in Yellowknife this summer has been amazing - we've had 10+ weeks of >18C temperatures. Brian and I had a boat at our disposal so we went fishing on Walsh lake whenever we could (Thanks Jeff and Kandace)
On July 22, Brian and I flew to Edmonton and visited with some high school classmates at a get-together at his friend Manfred's house. We met his wife Michelle before they returned to Australia for another year. The next day we flew to Vancouver and took a ferry over to the island. We spent a week at the lake (Brian was thrown in with my family and survived) a few days in Victoria and then I sent Brian home back to work and I continued my vacation at the lake. (good thing I have a government job with lots of holidays!) I returned to Yellowknife in the second week on August and have had a great time fishing, visiting with friends and camping. Next we have to work on our house!!
